Start from the research model, not the software interface

MATLAB and Simulink are flexible environments, but a technically running model is not automatically a valid research model. The first step is to identify what the model represents, which assumptions are embedded in it and what evidence would support its use.

Typical review areas

  • Equations, parameter definitions and units.
  • Initial conditions, solver choices and numerical tolerances.
  • Signal flow, state definitions and subsystem boundaries in Simulink.
  • Reproducibility of scripts, data inputs and figures.
  • Whether the reported output answers the research question rather than merely showing a successful run.
